The University of Tennessee Health Science Center commencement activities are held for UT colleges and the College of Social Work in June and December of each year. The Office of Student Life provides information concerning commencement activities. Attendance at Convocation and Graduation is required of all students. Therefore, medical students wishing to graduate in absentia may be permitted by the Dean after a petition for graduation in absentia has been submitted to the College of Medicine's Office of Student Affairs at least two months prior to graduation. Please be adivsed: Adobe Acrobat Reader is required for some links.

Each year, Mississippi Boulevard Christian Church offers a professional recording of the Deans' Convocation for purchase. There will be a table setup for DVD orders prior to and after the ceremony. The cost of the DVD is approximately $33.00. Most major credit cards, cash and checks accepted. Purchased DVDs are mailed out within 3-4 weeks of the Deans' Convocation. Student Academic Regalia
Deadline for ordering academic regalia: March 30, 2010

  • in person at the UT Bookstore, 910 Madison Avenue;
  • OR by calling Sandra Boone at the UT Bookstore (901) 448-5413;
  • OR by completing the Class of 2010 online Student Academic Regalia Order Form [UT NETID and password required].

Student regalia must be picked up in the Lobby of the 910 Plaza Building on Wednesday, May 26th or Thursday, May 27th.

Graduation Requirements

As outlined by the University of Tennessee Health Science Center, a student must satisfy all academic requirements for the Doctor of Medicine degree as well as discharge all financial obligations to the University and affiliated organizations. Failure to satisfy any outstanding financial obligation (i.e., library fines, parking tickets, loans, etc.) and/or all academic requirements will result in having a "hold" placed on the student's diploma and/or official transcript. Students should contact our Office of Student Affairs (448-5684) or the Office of Academic Affairs (448-5506) for further information requiring graduation requirements. Attendance at graduation is required. A request to graduate in absentia must be approved by the Dean of the College. Contact the Office of Student Affairs for more information on graduating in absentia.

The College of Medicine has instituted a Deans' Convocation in honor of the graduating class and their families. This ceremony includes an address by the Dean of the College of Medicine, addresses by faculty and student representatives, recognition of honors and award recipients, hooding, and the administration of the Oath of Hippocrates.

Outstanding students are recognized for their achievement during the College of the Medicine Convocation Ceremony each year. These awards are given in recognition of academic excellence, achievement in clinical medicine, research, leadership and service to the community and to the institution, and are listed below. The Subcommittee on Recognition and Awards, with the support of the Office of Student Affairs, considers all candidates for these awards and makes the final selection of the recipients.

"The University of Tennessee, College of Medicine has its roots in Nashville as the Nashville Medical College. That college as organized in 1876, and in 1879 was acquired by the University of Tennessee as its medical department. The Memphis Hospital Medical College was also found in 1876 but, because of the yellow fever epidemic in Memphis, did not actually hold classes until 1880. In 1909 two Nashville schools merged and were operating as the joint Medical department of the University of Nashville and the University of Tennessee. It moved to Memphis in 1911 and merged with the College of Physicians and Surgeons to become the University of Tennessee, College of Medicine... "
